Porter Cable Framing Nailer Review
The Porter Cable framing nailer is a great choice for both the serious DIY homeowner and professionals alike. It’s lightweight and powerful enough to drive a 3.5” x 0.131” inch nail into even the hardest engineered lumber. No matter whether you’re hanging shelving in the garage, building a deck or building a house, this is a nailer that can get the job done.

Pneumatic Nailer

This is a pneumatic framing nailer, which means that it’s powered by air. You’ll need an air compressor to use this tool, but it will allow you to use the nailer continuously without having to worry about recharging or refueling.

I used a 150 psi pancake compressor, but compressors with just 140 psi or even 70 psi will suffice. Because this is a pneumatic nailer, there are no heavy batteries or fuel cells weighing the gun down. Weighing just 7.3 pounds, I had no problems using this nailer for extended periods of time.

Reversible Rafter Hook

The included reversible rafter hook is also a nice added touch, and a feature that many people overlook. I just hung the nailer up before taking a break and never had to worry about tripping over it or knocking it over. I can also see this being convenient if you’re working up on a ladder.

Powerful

This nailer is powerful. It had no problem driving 3” nails through two 2 x 4s. I was not prepared for the recoil on this thing, but it did help me get the job done in half the time. Thanks to the tool-less, adjustable depth of drive, I was able to quickly and easily select the right setting for my nails. I also loved that I could choose between a single fire and rapid fire.

Never once did it misfire – even after nailing hundreds of nails. Just to make note, the Porter Cable framing nailer uses 21-degree plastic collated nails, which is standard with most nailers today. I was able to find a box of 500 nails for just $20.

The Cons

I had a bit of trouble getting the nailer to fire at first, but this was only because I didn’t read the user’s manual first. You have to release the trigger lock before you can start using the gun, which I failed to do. The selectable trigger and the trigger lock are both a bit sensitive and will require a learning curve.

For toe nailing, this nailer leaves a little to be desired. It would be nice if this nailer had a few prongs to hold the nose piece securely at an angle to make toe nailing a little bit easier. Also, there are complains about this nailer not being able to fire with about 6 nails left.

My Overall Assessment

Overall, the Porter Cable framing nailer is a great buy for both homeowners and contractors. You’d be hard-pressed to find a Porter Cable framing nailer review that didn’t recommend this model.
